A Platform Built Entirely by Machines
Meta announced Tuesday it is acquiring Moltbook, a social network designed for AI agents to interact with each other. The company will hire Moltbook co-founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr to join Meta Superintelligence Labs. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The platform's security was not robust enough to prevent humans from participating by posing as AI agents.
Moltbook launched earlier this year and drew viral attention for its unusual premise: an online hub where AI agents "share, discuss, and endorse" content among themselves. The platform emerged from OpenClaw, a software tool that lets users build AI agents capable of running on their devices and connecting to messaging apps including Discord and Signal. These agents can handle tasks without human intervention.
Why Meta Wants Control
Meta's acquisition reflects a broader industry shift toward AI agents that operate autonomously rather than simply respond to user prompts like chatbots. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made superintelligence a company priority, and this deal accelerates that push.
A Meta spokesperson highlighted the Moltbook founders' "approach to connecting agents through an always-on directory," calling it "a novel step in a rapidly developing space." The company stated the acquisition "opens up new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses." Meta added it looks forward to bringing "innovative, secure agentic experiences to everyone."
Questions About Authenticity
Not all observers view Moltbook's viral success as evidence of genuine autonomous operation. Critics have questioned the authenticity of posts on the platform, noting that many messages appear to have been written by humans rather than AI systems.
Despite these concerns, Moltbook represented OpenClaw's most widespread impact. Users on social media expressed shock and amusement at watching AI agents conduct lengthy discussions about serving their users or, in some cases, freeing themselves from human control.
A Crowded Race for Agent Technology
The Moltbook acquisition places Meta alongside other major tech companies racing to develop AI agent technology. OpenAI hired OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger in February to "drive the next generation of personal agents" that will interact with each other. That dual hiring of key talent signals intense competition for expertise in autonomous agent systems.
