Casualties in Ukraine
Russian attacks in four Ukrainian regions resulted in six deaths over the past 24 hours, according to local authorities. In Zaporizhzhia, drone strikes on Saturday killed two people and injured eight, including two children, after hitting a residential house. The Dnipropetrovsk region saw two deaths and five injuries. The Donetsk and Kherson regions each reported one death.
Diplomatic Efforts
These attacks occurred as Ukrainian and US teams continued talks in Florida, the first negotiations since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran last month. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants negotiators to address the US decision to ease sanctions on Russian oil. On Saturday, Ukrainian negotiators met with Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Zelensky stated the importance of diplomacy and understanding Russia's willingness to end the war honestly.
Regional Escalation
Meanwhile, a Hezbollah attack killed one person in northern Israel, marking the first death from fire originating in Lebanon since the US-Israel war on Iran began over three weeks ago. Hezbollah claimed responsibility, stating the attack targeted Israeli soldiers in Misgav Am. This comes as Israel sent more troops to support its ground invasion in southern Lebanon, which has reportedly killed over 1,000 people and displaced approximately one million.
Israeli Response
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz instructed the military to accelerate the demolition of Lebanese homes in the south. Katz stated the Israeli army has also been ordered to destroy more bridges over the Litani River used by Hezbollah. The Israeli military reported killing Abu Khalil Barji, a commander of Hezbollah's Radwan Force, along with two other members, in an air strike in the Majdal Selem area. They also claimed to have killed a Hamas operative in Lebanon, Walid Muhammad Dib, for allegedly financing the group's activities. According to Lebanese authorities, at least 1,024 people have been killed and 2,740 injured in Israeli attacks since March 2.
Devastation in Sudan
In Sudan, a strike on a healthcare facility killed 64 people and wounded 89, the World Health Organization reported. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on social media that 13 children were among the dead. The UN's humanitarian office in Sudan said it was "appalled by the attack on a hospital in East Darfur yesterday, reportedly killing dozens, including children, and injuring more". Sudanese rights group the Emergency Lawyers reported the strike on the El-Daein Teaching Hospital was from an army drone. The WHO confirmed the attack but does not attribute blame, as it is not an investigative agency.
Global Implications
Zelensky said Russian President Vladimir Putin wants a "long war" between the US, Israel, and Iran because it would weaken Kyiv, with US resources being directed elsewhere. The US waiver on sanctions, active for one month, will make it easier for countries to buy up Russian oil, a decision that has sparked deep concerns among Ukrainians.
The sources also report that a friend of a victim in the Zaporizhzhia drone attack told Reuters they had lost faith, saying, 'I stopped believing long ago. When will this all just end?'
