"Profitable Business"
President Trump described the U.S. Navy as acting "like pirates" while discussing the blockade of Iranian ports. Speaking at a rally in Florida on Friday, Trump said the U.S. is seizing ships, cargo, and oil. According to Trump, "It’s a very profitable business." He added, "We’re sort of like pirates. But we’re not playing games."
Blockade Consequences
The U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports began last month after peace talks in Pakistan failed. The Defense Department estimates the blockade has cost Iran $4.8 billion in oil revenue. The blockade is one of the actions President Trump has used to put pressure on Iran.
Naval Presence
U.S. Central Command has redirected 45 vessels to "ensure compliance" with the blockade as of Friday. The blockade "applies to all ships, regardless of nationality, heading into or from Iranian ports,” said GenDan Caine. Pete Hegseth, the Pentagon chief, stated in April that the blockade will last “as long as it takes.”
Iranian Response
Iran has vowed to maintain its chokehold on the strait of Hormuz as long as Washington continues to blockade its ports. Legal experts have raised alarms about Iran’s blockade of the vital strait of Hormuz. Tehran effectively closed the waterway – a key route for oil and gas shipments – after the start of the U.S.-Israeli air campaign against Iran on February 28. The country also plans to charge a fee for ships passing through it.
Escalating Tensions
Trump's comparison of U.S. naval activity to piracy comes amid rising tensions with Iran. Iran has vowed to maintain its chokehold on the strait as long as Washington continues to blockade its ports. The U.S. naval blockade and Iran's response in the Strait of Hormuz could further disrupt global oil and gas shipments.
