The Initial Report in Burgenland
Police in Austria's Burgenland region confirmed a jar of HiPP carrot and potato purée contained rat poison after a customer reported it. The customer said their baby had not eaten the food, avoiding potential harm. Authorities believe at least one more tampered jar exists and issued specific instructions for spotting suspicious products.
HiPP's Recall and Statement
HiPP recalled its entire range of jarred purées from Spar supermarkets in Austria on Saturday, citing risks of "life-threatening" effects. The Germany-based company stated on its website that the issue stemmed from a criminal act, not a factory defect, and that jars left the facility in perfect condition. HiPP noted that isolated tampered jars had been seized in the Czech Republic and Slovakia as part of ongoing investigations.
Spread to Neighboring Countries
Retailers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia removed all HiPP baby food jars from sale as a precaution after police seizures there. Spar also pulled the products from stores in other countries to prevent further risks. According to police, the warning had come from German investigators about the tampering.
Consumer Safety Measures
The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety advised parents to watch for damaged or open lids, a missing safety seal, an unusual or spoiled odor, or a white sticker with a red circle on jars. If children show signs of bleeding, extreme weakness, or paleness after consuming HiPP food, families must consult a doctor immediately. Customers were told to return jars bought at Eurospar, Interspar, and Maximarkt for a full refund, with more than 1,500 Spar shops across Austria affected.
Previous Baby Food Contaminations
Nestle and Danone recalled specific batches of infant formula in January and February due to toxin cereulide contamination, impacting more than 60 countries. The UKHSA said in February that at least 36 infants in Britain had suffered food poisoning from these batches, though none faced life-threatening conditions. HiPP's baby formula remained unaffected by the current incident, unlike the purées sold in Spar.
Human Impact and Next Actions
Parents who purchased HiPP purées from Spar in Austria should check jars for tampering signs and return them without delay to protect their children's health.
