Market Reaction
Global oil prices surged Sunday after US-Iran peace talks stalled. Brent crude reached $107.49, and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) hit $96.17.
Diplomatic Efforts Stalled
Efforts to resume peace talks over the Iran war faltered after President Donald Trump canceled a planned trip by his top envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Iran stated it would not negotiate while being threatened.
Iran's Position
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi departed Islamabad for Moscow on Monday for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other officials as Tehran seeks a way out of the diplomatic impasse. Araghchi voiced skepticism about the US's seriousness regarding talks, stating he had "yet to see if the US is truly serious about diplomacy." Araghchi met with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq in Oman to discuss security and safe passage for ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
US Response
President Trump said, "If they want, we can talk but we're not sending people." He added, "All they have to do is call!" Trump told Axios that the cancellation of Witkoff and Kushner's trip did not necessarily mean a return to hostilities.
Strait of Hormuz Impact
Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to impact global markets. Traffic through the Strait has reduced to a trickle, paralyzing a large portion of the world's supply of oil and natural gas. On Saturday, 19 commercial vessels transited the strait, which normally sees about 129 daily transits.
Regional Tensions
Fourteen people were killed in Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon on Sunday, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. The deaths included two women and two children. The Israeli military said one soldier was killed and six more were wounded in southern Lebanon.
Ceasefire Violations
Hezbollah accused Israel of violating the April 17 ceasefire. Hezbollah said its attacks on Israeli targets were "a legitimate response to the enemy's persistent violations of the ceasefire since the first day of the announcement of the temporary truce." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel's strikes on Lebanon did not violate the terms agreed to with Washington and Beirut.
Proposal to End War
Iran gave the United States a new proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, according to Axios. The proposal involves postponing nuclear negotiations.
With the Strait of Hormuz restricted, Turkey said it would consider taking part in operations to demine the waterway if the US reaches a peace deal with Iran.
