Dnipro Bears Brunt of Overnight Barrage
Russian forces launched a sustained attack across Ukraine overnight that killed at least seven people, according to Ukrainian officials and the BBC, with the central city of Dnipro suffering the heaviest casualties. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the assault lasted "practically all night," while rescue workers searched for survivors beneath rubble in Dnipro on Saturday morning. Officials reported that five people died in Dnipro alone when Russian missiles and drones struck a residential apartment building, according to state authorities and the BBC.
The attack extended far beyond Dnipro. In the northeastern Sumy region, Governor Oleh Hryhorov said two men were killed in strikes near Bilopil close to the Russian border. The northern city of Chernihiv saw two more deaths from Russian missiles and drones.
Scale and Scope of the Assault
Ukrainian authorities said they repelled the vast majority of more than 600 Russian drones, which appears to have been the largest attack in several days. Ukraine's air force said it shot down or disabled 124 of 144 drones launched overnight, with impacts recorded at 11 locations. Russia's Ministry of Defence claimed its air defences destroyed 203 Ukrainian drones between Saturday evening and Sunday morning across Russian regions and the Black Sea.
The strikes targeted civilian infrastructure across multiple regions. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba said Russian forces targeted port infrastructure in Odesa, damaging warehouses, technical equipment, cargo storage tanks, and administrative buildings. A civilian vessel flying the flag of Palau was damaged while loading in port, though no crew injuries were reported. In the Zaporizhia region, Russian forces launched more than 700 attacks on 50 settlements over 24 hours, killing two people and injuring four, according to Governor Ivan Fedorov.
Ukraine's Counteroffensive Deep Inside Russia
Ukrainian forces responded with drone strikes that penetrated deep into Russian territory. In Yekaterinburg, almost 1,000 miles from Ukraine's border, the governor said six people were injured when a building was struck. In the Vologda region, Governor Georgy Filimonov reported five people injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on a nitrogen complex.
In Sevastopol in annexed Crimea, debris from downed drones struck the cardiology department of a hospital, injuring one person, according to Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev. He said 16 Ukrainian drones were shot down over the city overnight and that drone debris also damaged rail tracks and overhead power lines, causing train delays.
Diplomatic Stalemate Persists
Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine remain at an impasse. Zelensky signed agreements on security and energy cooperation with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Saturday, stating that Kyiv wanted to draw on its experience defending airspace from Russian attacks. Zelensky said he had discussed the possibility of holding future talks between Ukraine and Russia in Azerbaijan, telling reporters: "We are ready for the next talks to be in Azerbaijan, if Russia will be ready for diplomacy."
The sources report that Russia's Ministry of Defence claimed to have shot down 127 drones over regions, differing from the summary's figure of 203.
