Financial Toll of Conflict
The war in Iran has cost the United States $29 billion, Pentagon officials told Congress. President Trump departed for Beijing to discuss the escalating tensions with Xi Jinping. The war is impacting daily life, as US inflation jumped to 3.8% in April.
Supply Chain Disruptions
The war's disruption of resources is impacting supply chains. Some snack packages in Japan are turning black-and-white, as the war in Iran disrupts the supply of an ingredient used in colored ink. Calbee Inc., which makes potato chips, said the change on 14 products will start May 25, limiting ink colors to just two. European companies operating in China are shifting more production to the country as part of broader supply chain adjustments, according to a survey by the EU Chamber of Commerce in China.
Impact on Military Families
Military families are feeling the strain of the ongoing conflict. Jessica Serrato, whose partner is deployed to the Middle East, said she is constantly worried about his safety. About 50,000 American troops are currently deployed across the Middle East. Serrato's partner is expected to return to Los Angeles this summer, but his return date has already been delayed a month. The U.S. military death toll has risen to 14.
Internal Crackdown in Iran
Amid the war, Iran is increasing pressure on political prisoners. Since mid-March, there have been at least 28 executions in Iran, including 13 people arrested in connection with January protests, according to Iran Human Rights. The government has also arrested at least 4,000 people on charges related to national security since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28, the United Nations said. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi had a heart attack in prison and has been transferred to a hospital in Tehran for treatment.
Political Maneuvering
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers on Tuesday that congressional authorization is not required for the military operation against Iran. Sen. Lindsey Graham said he does not “trust Pakistan” as a mediator amid peace talks between the Trump administration and Tehran. The Wall Street Journal said it received grand jury subpoenas from the Department of Justice for reporters’ records over media leaks connected to the U.S.-Israeli conflict in Iran.
As ship operators fear fuel shortages, consumers and companies should brace for price spikes to shipping costs and impacts to bottom lines.
