Justice Department Decision
The U.S. Department of Justice is expected to drop its criminal fraud case against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, the richest man in Asia. Adani was accused of conspiring to pay $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials.
Giuffra's Intervention
Robert J. Giuffra Jr., Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, now leads Adani's legal team. Giuffra met with the Justice Department in April. He said that Adani would invest $10 billion in the U.S. economy and create 15,000 jobs if prosecutors dropped the charges against him.
SEC Settlement
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) also settled a civil lawsuit against Adani, subject to court approval. The SEC accused the Adanis of paying bribes and misleading investors, allegations they denied. The Adanis agreed to pay $18 million to settle the civil fraud case.
Broader Implications
Adani faces other cases in U.S. courts, one of which was settled by the SEC. News of the dropped fraud charges comes as Boeing shares dropped 4% after Trump announced China orders just 200 jets.
