Automatic Renewal Halted
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced Tuesday that Italy has suspended the automatic renewal of a defense cooperation deal with Israel. The agreement involves the exchange of military equipment and technology research. Meloni made the announcement on the sidelines of an event in Verona, according to Italian news agencies ANSA and AGI.
Agreement Details
The defense cooperation agreement, initially approved by Israel in 2006, is automatically renewed every five years. It facilitates collaboration across defense industries, military education and training, research and development, and information technology.
Rising Tensions
Tensions between Italy and Israel have increased recently. The Italian government accused Israeli forces of firing warning shots at a convoy of Italian UN peacekeepers in Lebanon. The incident damaged at least one vehicle, but caused no injuries.
Diplomatic Fallout
Italy summoned Israel's ambassador in protest. Israel, in turn, summoned Italy's ambassador after Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani condemned "unacceptable attacks" on Lebanese civilians by Israeli forces. Tajani, who also serves as deputy prime minister, met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi in Beirut on Monday. He conveyed Italy's solidarity following Israel's attacks against the civilian population.
Trump's Disapproval
U.S. President Donald Trump told an Italian newspaper on Tuesday that he was "shocked" by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. He expected her to be more courageous. Trump criticized Meloni for refusing to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blocked by Iran, according to the South China Morning Post. Trump told Corriere della Sera that Meloni was "very different from what I thought." She has criticized his decision to go to war with Iran and denounced his weekend criticism of Pope Leo as "unacceptable."
No Immediate Reaction
There was no immediate reaction from the Israeli government following Italy's announcement, according to Al Jazeera. The suspension of the defense agreement adds another layer of complexity to the relationship between the two countries amid ongoing Middle East conflicts.
