Domestic Dispute Turns Deadly
Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax fatally shot his wife, Cerina Fairfax, before taking his own life at their home in Annandale, according to Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis. Police responded to an emergency call from the couple's son just after midnight. Both of the couple's teenage children were at home when the incident occurred.
Details of the Shooting
Davis told reporters that the shooting appeared to be the result of a domestic dispute surrounding their divorce. Investigators found bullet casings near Cerina Fairfax's body and said there was no prolonged confrontation before the shooting. "I think it all kind of happened at once," Davis said. "There wasn't a pause... it all happened pretty spontaneously."
Divorce as Possible Spark
The couple was separated but living in the same home. Fairfax had recently been served with divorce paperwork indicating when he was next to appear in court. Davis said that the paperwork "may have been a spark."
Political Career Overshadowed
Fairfax, a Democrat, served as lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022. He was the second black person elected to statewide office in Virginia. His tenure was overshadowed by sexual assault allegations, which he denied. Vanessa Tyson accused Fairfax of forcing her to perform oral sex in his hotel room during the Democratic National Convention in Boston in 2004. Meredith Watson accused Fairfax of raping her in 2000, when they were students at Duke University.
Reactions to the Tragedy
Former Governor Ralph Northam, under whom Fairfax served, said, "Pam and I are devastated by this heartbreaking news." Davis stated, "This is certainly a fall from grace for a relatively high-profile family that seemingly had a lot of things going for them." He added that it was "tragic for the children to lose both parents" and "extra tragic for them to actually be in the home when it occurred."
A Rising Star Derailed
Fairfax ran for Virginia governor in 2021 but lost in the primary election. For a brief period in 2019, Fairfax had seemed poised to become Virginia governor as Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam became engulfed in a scandal over a racist photo on his medical school yearbook.
Community Impact
Davis said, "It's very sad for this community. A lot of people who know the Fairfax family, everybody's shocked. We're shocked." The national suicide and crisis lifeline in the U.S. is available by calling or texting 988.
