Evacuation Zone Declared
The Israeli military issued evacuation orders for a large portion of southern Lebanon, declaring the area south of the Zahrani River a "combat zone." The Israel Defense Forces urged residents to move north of the river, which is about 25 miles from the border. The IDF stated it would act "with extreme force" against Hezbollah, accusing the group of repeated ceasefire violations. The evacuation order covers about 14% of Lebanese territory, encompassing roughly 300 towns and villages.
Escalation and Displacement
The order for Tyre, one of the biggest cities in southern Lebanon, was followed by air strikes. Rida, a cafe owner in Tyre, said, "People packed up their stuff. Everyone is scared." He had previously vowed never to leave Tyre after his cafe was destroyed in an air strike last month. Officials and humanitarian workers reported that Sidon, a coastal city south of Beirut, is overwhelmed with displaced families, and urged civilians to relocate to the Beqaa Valley and Mount Lebanon.
Intensified Military Action
Israeli forces conducted over 120 air strikes on Tuesday, marking one of the heaviest days of bombing in weeks, according to Lebanese security sources. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his military was "deepening" its operations in the country. Hezbollah said its fighters clashed with Israeli forces "at point-blank range" in Zawtar al-Sharqiyeh, north of the Litani River.
The sources also report that Israeli forces conducted over 150 air strikes in a 24-hour period, impacting around 50 towns and villages across southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.
Casualties and Damage
Lebanon's health ministry reported that Israeli strikes had killed 31 people and wounded 40. Fourteen people, including two children and three women, were killed in Burj al-Shamali. Strikes also hit near the Beaufort Castle, a nearly 900-year-old fortress. At least three strikes hit near the Qaraoun Dam in east Lebanon. Since the start of the war, at least 3,213 people have been killed in Lebanon, according to the country's health ministry. Israel says 23 of its soldiers and four Israeli civilians have been killed.
Ceasefire Violations and Talks
The recent bombing raids have further strained the ceasefire announced on April 16. Israeli officials claim Hezbollah's attacks are violating the ceasefire agreement. Lebanese officials have pointed to the Israeli strikes as violations. The escalation threatens to derail talks aimed at ending the war between the US, Israel, and Iran. Iran insists that any deal must also cover Lebanon.
Regional Implications
Lebanon was drawn into the war on 2 March, when Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel in retaliation for an Israeli strike that killed an Iranian leader. Israel responded with an air campaign across Lebanon and a ground invasion. The IDF has issued nine evacuation warnings in the past 24 hours, fueling fears of a major escalation along the Israel-Lebanon border and the prospect of renewed mass displacement.
The sources also report that the Israel Defense Forces issued nine evacuation warnings in the past 24 hours.
