Troop Reduction Order
The Pentagon announced Friday that approximately 5,000 U.S. troops will be withdrawn from Germany. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the withdrawal, which is expected to take six to twelve months. Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said the decision follows a thorough review of the Department’s force posture in Europe. The withdrawal will reduce U.S. troop levels to roughly pre-2022 levels.
Trump's Frustration
President Donald Trump threatened to pull troops following remarks made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about the U.S. war with Iran. Trump has criticized NATO allies for a perceived lack of support in the conflict. Merz stated on Monday that the "Americans clearly have no strategy" regarding Iran, and that the U.S. was being "humiliated" by Iranian negotiators.
Congressional Reaction
Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, called the troop withdrawal a "foolish decision." Reed said weakening the military footprint in Europe is a "priceless gift to Vladimir Putin." Bradley Bowman, a scholar at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, stated the U.S. military's presence in Germany strengthens deterrence against Kremlin aggression.
Impact on Military Presence
Germany hosts several U.S. military facilities, including the headquarters of U.S. European Command and Africa Command. Ramstein Air Base and a medical center in Landstuhl are also located in Germany. Landstuhl Regional Medical Center will not be affected by the withdrawals. Approximately 38,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Germany. The departing troops will consist of a U.S. Army brigade combat team.
Shifting Priorities
Defense officials said some of the U.S. forces being moved out of Europe may return to the U.S. and then be deployed abroad. The Pentagon described this as an effort to focus on priorities in the U.S. homeland and the Indo-Pacific region. The senior Pentagon official said the removal of 5,000 troops from Germany "sends a very clear signal about how important it is for Germany and other allies to take primary responsibility for Europe's defense."
Political Fallout
Trump posted on social media that Merz should "spend more time on ending" the Russia-Ukraine war and "fixing his broken Country." Trump also said Merz "doesn't know what he's talking about" regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The withdrawal aligns with the Trump administration’s priorities on the Western Hemisphere and Indo-Pacific.
