Support for Ceasefire Talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received the backing of European leaders Sir Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, and Friedrich Merz in calling for direct ceasefire talks between Ukraine and Russia. In a joint statement, the leaders supported Zelensky's proposal for a "direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia – with active US and European participation – to bring about a ceasefire and support further negotiations". The leaders, referred to as the E3 group, have been prominent backers of Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing war.
The Five Conditions
The joint statement issued after talks in London outlined five conditions for reaching a "just and lasting" deal to end the war with Russia. These include a stop to the fighting, starting negotiations from the current position in the field, and "robust" security guarantees for Ukraine. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of Ukraine's right "to choose its own security arrangements and alliances must be fully respected".
Ongoing Conflict
As diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled, both sides have intensified attacks against each other. On Saturday, Ukrainian drones hit Russia's second-largest city, St Petersburg, while Russia has used missiles and drones to attack Ukrainian cities. The conflict has significant implications for regional stability and international relations.
US Involvement
The leaders reiterated the need for the US to be part of the process. In December, the US pushed Russia and Ukraine to sign up quickly to a plan to end the war, which began with Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision in February 2022 to launch a full-scale invasion of its neighbour.
Humanitarian and Safety Concerns
The conflict's humanitarian and safety implications were underscored by recent attacks. A drone strike near the Chornobyl nuclear plant raised concerns about nuclear safety, with Zelensky accusing Russia of a "vile" attack. The attack "partially destroyed" a spent nuclear fuel storage building, but radiation levels remained stable with no casualties reported. These incidents highlight the potential for the conflict to escalate with severe consequences.
