Stabbing Incident at Penn Station Leaves Five Injured, Suspect Apprehended

Five people were stabbed at New York City's Penn Station on Sunday evening, resulting in injuries ranging from minor to serious. All six individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment, with five taken to Bellevue Hospital and one to Cornell Hospital.

Authorities apprehended the suspect, identified as a man experiencing homelessness, shortly after the attack. Amtrak Police, who are leading the investigation, reported that a knife was recovered at the scene. A senior law enforcement official indicated that the suspect appeared to have mental health issues, and there are no initial signs that the attack was connected to terrorism.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his condolences on social media, stating, "My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence." He praised the swift response of Amtrak police and confirmed that there were no disruptions to Amtrak service following the incident. Governor Kathy Hochul also condemned the stabbings, labeling them as “an act of horrific violence” and emphasizing the need for New Yorkers to feel safe in their communities.

The stabbing incident coincides with heightened security measures in the city ahead of President Trump’s visit to watch the NBA Finals on Monday. City officials announced new precautions, including a no-bag policy and the cancellation of a watch party outside Madison Square Garden, which sits directly above Penn Station.
