The Council rated this article as leaning left due to its framing of the policy shift as a 'reversal of course' from technology investments, potentially implying a critique of prior, presumably less cautious, approaches to education technology.

Policy Shift

The Los Angeles Unified School District voted to restrict screen time in classrooms, becoming the first major school system in the United States to do so. The approved resolution mandates the creation of a screen time policy for each grade and subject. Students in first grade and younger will be prohibited from using devices. Parents will also have a clarified process to opt their child out of technology use at school.

Reversal of Course

The vote marks a turnaround for the district, which invested in education technology for several years and was pushed by its embattled superintendent. The new policy will take effect in the upcoming school year. The district will audit its education technology contracts.

National Implications

NBC News reports that Los Angeles is the first school district of its size in a major city to take on this approach, though a handful of smaller districts have enacted similar policies. The school district is the second largest in the nation.

Trump Administration

President Donald Trump extended a two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. Peace talks between the two countries will continue. Vice President JD Vance's planned trip to Pakistan for another round of negotiations was also postponed. The Revolutionary Guard said two ships were seized in the Strait of Hormuz and escorted to Iran's coast. Iran's semi-official news agency Fars reported that a third vessel has also been attacked.
