The Tariff Reversal and GM's Windfall
General Motors announced it expects to receive $500 million in refunds from tariffs that the Supreme Court ruled illegal. CEO Mary Barra disclosed the expected refund in a letter to shareholders released on Tuesday as the company announced its first-quarter results. The automaker is boosting its full-year profit forecast by the same $500 million amount.
The Supreme Court ruled in February that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not give President Donald Trump the power to unilaterally impose tariffs. The federal government opened a refund portal last week to allow companies to apply for tariff money back.
Scale of the Tariff Impact
GM is one of more than 330,000 importers who paid the invalidated tariffs, which totaled $166 billion across all companies. The IEEPA tariffs alone cost the typical American household $700 last year, according to the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.
Barra also cited strong sales of GM's full-size pickup trucks in her shareholder letter, despite rising gas prices, as a contributor to the company's improved financial outlook.
